License FAQ

Common questions about the Elastic License 2.0 and how it applies to Antfly.

About Elastic License 2.0 (ELv2)

What is ELv2?+

ELv2 is a simple, non-copyleft license that grants you the right to use, copy, distribute, make available, and prepare derivative works of the software. Anyone can use Antfly free of charge, and you can run the software at scale on your own infrastructure.

What are the limitations?+

Three high-level limitations exist. You can’t:

  1. Provide the products to others as a managed service
  2. Circumvent the license key functionality or remove/obscure features protected by license keys
  3. Remove or obscure any licensing, copyright, or other notices
Can I use Antfly for free?+

Yes. ELv2 allows you to use, modify, and deploy Antfly at no cost as long as you operate within the three limitations above. There is no seat limit, no usage cap, and no time restriction.

Can I run Antfly in production?+

Absolutely. You can run Antfly in production on your own infrastructure — on-premises or in your own cloud account — without a commercial license.

What does "managed service" mean?+

A managed service is when you host Antfly and provide access to a substantial set of its features to third parties as a service. For example, offering “Database-as-a-Service powered by Antfly” to your customers would require a commercial license. Using Antfly as a backend for your own product or SaaS is fine.

Alternative Licenses

What license does Termite use?+

Termite, our local ML inference runtime, is fully open source under the Apache 2.0 license — one of the most permissive licenses available. You can use it however you like with no managed-service restriction.

What about Antfly Cloud?+

Antfly Cloud, our fully managed service, requires a separate commercial license. Get in touch for pricing and terms.
